Carrying Cases
The first thing that I want to mention about these headphones is going to be their carrying cases. Unfortunately, Sony only comes included with a carrying pouch.
Whereas both the Surface Headphones 2 and Razer opus come included with hard-shell carrying cases. But the opus carrying case is better because it’s significantly smaller than the Surface 2 case.
The surface case is manageable, but smaller carrying cases are better. So, the Razer opus does take the first win here.
Build Quality & Fit
When it comes to building quality, all of these headphones have the decent build quality, and none of them have any underlying issues to point out.
They’re all using dense, sturdy plastics, they all have zero cracking, and all have leatherette. I feel it’s a tie between these three headphones.
These headphones do fit a little differently from one another. Ultimately, I feel the Sony XB900N are the best-fitting headphones here.
They don’t have a lot of clamping force, so they’re big head approved, and their earpads are fairly spacious. They should be able to accommodate most ear types.
The Razer Opus also has very little clamping force, and you can also wear these headphones for hours on end without any issues.
Their ear pads are just slightly more cramped than the ear pads on the Sony. The Opus fit me just fine, but if you have larger ears that stick out a lot, then you’ll want to go with Sony.
If you don’t have larger ears, it is nice to have that extra bit of bass in the Sony. Surface 2 has the most spacious earpads, but these headphones have a little more clamping force.
So, they do have a slightly firmer fit for them. I still feel comfortable saying that these headphones are big head approved because they don’t feel like they’re squeezing your head.
Still, I feel these headphones are the least comfortable headphones because of their minimal padding underneath their headband.
Overall, both Sony and Opus fit great, but I feel Sony is a little more comfortable cause of their slightly more spacious earpads, and then there is the Surface 2, which might not fit everybody perfectly.
Tech Specs
Speaking of tech specs, all three of these headphones charge via a USB-C port. Just keep in mind that these USB-C ports are strictly used for charging.
You will not be able to use USB-C on any of these headphones as a wired connection to a few other headphones like yours.
Battery Life
Unfortunately, the Surface 2 lags because they only have 20 hours of battery life. But if you turn on headphones with APTX, you are looking for about 18 hours of battery life.
While the Opus is good for 25 hours of playback time which is average for headphones, Sony is up to 30 hours to launch their ANC, which is slightly above average.
Bluetooth
Now when it comes to Bluetooth connection. All of these headphones have stable connections.
However, the Surface 2 is the only headphone that can be connected to 2 devices at the same time so that you can easily switch from one device to another.
Finally, it’s no big deal that Sony and Opus can’t do it, but it feels good to be able to, and it’s something power users want to notice.
Audio Quality
When watching movies or videos on your phone, all of these headphones have zero-latency across the board, whether you’re using an iPhone or an Android device.
If you want to, you can always use a wired connection with any of these headphones because all of these headphones have easy-to-reach 3.5-millimeter audio jacks.
So up until now, the razer opus has done a very good job of keeping up with these slightly more expensive models.
The opus has the best carrying case. Their build quality is competitive with these other two headphones. The opus fits great and has better battery life than the surface headphones 2.
Even though the opus sound good and they do get the job done. Specifically, the bass on the opus lacks any physicality to it.
The bass on these headphones isn’t going to rattle your head, and the bass on these headphones doesn’t really resonate.
The opus does have an app and 5 different eq modes to choose from. You can’t make your own eq and even though the opus has a bass enhanced EQ. This EQ makes these headphones sound very shallow.
The opus is a pair of great-sounding neutral headphones because the soundstage and instrument separation on these headphones is average at best.
These headphones sound best in their stock THX EQ, and these headphones have a very strong midst.
There are the surface headphones 2 with their stock eq, and they should please most people. Again, these headphones have a strong midst.
Vocals are very pronounced, but these headphones aren’t so bright that the highs can get carried away, which is good.
More importantly, surface headphones 2 do have a decent amount of physical bass to them. They’re going to rattle your head a little bit. So, listening to your music is a little more engaging, which I like.
The only thing to look out for on these headphones is that their bass can bottom out on rare occasions with their stock eq and if you were to go into their eq settings and raise the low and mid-on, these headphones are too much.
Their bass is going to bottom out more frequently, which is not a good thing. But personally, I do prefer to listen to music with the surface 2 over the opus cause you’re getting some physicality from your bass.
I just recommend that you use the surface 2’s in their stock eq. There are Sony’s which I think are the best sounding headphones here and they’re also the people pleasers here.
Performance
These headphones have a much wider soundstage from a performance standpoint than what you’ll get from better device splits. The razer opus and Sony XB900N headphones have better clarity than the Surface 2.
More importantly, these headphones have a fully customizable EQ, so you can sound them if you want. You can do this if you prefer a neutral EQ or if you prefer a bus-heavy EQ. But the main thing to remember about the XB900N is that they have an extra bus feature; that’s what the XB is called.
If you want to turn the bass slider on all three headphones, they will physically spread your head more than your standard pair of headphones.
Sony XB900N extra bass feature is quite fun when you watch movies because it adds an extra mix layer.
Controls
Now when it comes to the media controls on these headphones. They’re all very different. The Razer Opus has your standard physical buttons. So, there’s zero hassle here. In comparison, Sony has a touchpad.
Now this touchpad is very accurate and it’s easy but on rare occasions, there might be some missed inputs. But you really shouldn’t fear this touchpad.
There are surface headphones that have a unique setup. They have a physical dial to adjust your volume, and you can play, pause, and skip through your music with a single tap, double-tap, or you can triple-tap to go back to a track.
All of these headphones have decent media controls, but my favorite ones here are the Surface Headphones 2.
Active Noise Cancellation
Let’s talk about active noise cancellation on these headphones. Both the Razer Opus and the Surface Headphones 2 respectfully block high-average volume entry levels and mid-tier ANC headphones.
Although the Sony XB900N blocks the amount of listening you’d expect from a pair of mid-range ANC headphones. The new ANC headphones will start to block more noise across the board.
Both the Razer Opus and the Surface Headphones 2 can make significantly more noise than Sony. These two headphones are blocking the noise, almost like the Sony 1000XM3.
Razer Opus manages to block street noise a bit more than the Surface 2. However, I still maintain that Surface 2 has better active noise cancellation.
If you are not playing music with these headphones or watching movies with these headphones, you will feel enough cabin pressure. It’s not as bad as the Bose QC35 II, which gives me a headache. But you’re going to feel like your ears have to pop. Although the cabin pressure of the Surface 2 is significantly lower.
You still feel something, but it’s not as bad as the opus. So, I still maintain that the Surface Headphones 2 is a good alternative to consider if you are looking for a near-premium level of Active Noise Cancellation on a mid-range budget.
Although the XB900N has these headphones that don’t make too much noise, active listening cancellation can help with these headphones when you’re on the bass, and there’s hardly any good cabin pressure for active noise cancellation on these headphones.
Ambient Mode
Unfortunately, the Razer Opus doesn’t have an ambient mode, but I first got these headphones. I thought they did because they have this NC/Ambient button on them.
The other two headphones have the ambient mode turned on and play music at the same time, even though the ambient mode on the Surface 2 does get the job done.
My main critique about the ambient mode on these headphones is that it sounds very unnatural, and it also likes to pick up a lot of wind noise. So, you can go to get some interference when walking outdoors.
Whereas the Ambient mode on Sony XB900N sound is much more natural, they do a much better job of active noise canceling when walking outdoors, and you can also adjust how much noise these headphones let in.
So, if you’re looking for a pair of headphones to commute with constantly, then these are a good option.
Overall
Overall, with all that being said, the Razer Opus is a pair of very well-built $200 ANC headphones that try to punch about their weight class.
The Opus, the Surface Headphones 2, and Sony XB900N are best for their money regarding their included carrying case, build quality, and fit. The Surface 2 headphones have long battery life compared to the other two.
When it comes to their performance, the Opus is not very good. The Razer opus doesn’t sound as good, their ANC has an above-average amount of cabin pressure for headphones getting released in 2020, and they lack a proper ambient mode.
Still, for $200, you are getting a lot from the Razer Opus. The Surface Headphones 2 is a great option if you are looking for premium ANC performance for mid-tier prices.
The Sony XB900N is one of the best mid-tier ANC headphones you can get. Because they fit great, sound good, and have that extra bass feature.
These headphones have a really good ambient mode for commuting. The only drawback of these headphones is their carrying pouch.
